Biography
Dr. Spyros Brezas is a graduate of the Department of Music Technology and Acoustics of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete. He was awarded the M.Sc. in Sound and Vibration Studies by the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, UK. From July 2013 to July 2021 he worked as a research associate at the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) as a member of the Applied Acoustics working group. In 2019 he was awarded the title of Dr.-Ing. by the RWTH Aachen University, Germany (thesis title: Investigation on the dissemination of unit watt in airborne sound and applications).
During his work at PTB, he participated in the European metrology research project SIB56 SoundPWR (Realisation, dissemination and application of the unit watt in airborne sound), for the determination of sound power using sound pressure measurements (ISO 3740 series), which refers to national and European legislation for the calculation of noise emitted by appliances, machines, mechanical equipment etc. He also worked on a research project of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture for the acoustic characterisation of building insulation materials from renewable raw materials (Insulating materials from renewables). He also collaborated with the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) on a project for the update the of the standardised procedure for the determination of sound power by measuring sound intensity, described by the ISO 9614 series (final report title: Practical adaptations of the sound intensity measurement method). As a PTB metrologist, he gained experience in laboratory and field measurements by participating in numerous acoustic reference measurements.
Since October 2021, he works as an acoustics consultant. His goal is to provide services to meet the client's needs by combining specialized knowledge and high expertise. Using calibrated high accuracy equipment and appropriate software, he develops acoustics projects, such as:
- Architectural acoustics measurements and applications for the optimization of the acoustic quality of spaces (e.g. restaurants, cafeterias, banquet halls, classrooms, multi-purpose spaces, etc.)
- Building acoustics measurements and applications for the determination of the sound reduction of partitions (walls, ceilings, floors, etc.)
- Noise control measurements and applications to mitigate noise from mechanical installations, traffic noise, etc.
- Measurements and abatement of occupational noise
- Acoustics training seminars
To provide comprehensive services to customers with high demands, he has attended TÜV Nord seminars for training as lead auditor of quality management systems according to ISO 9001, environmental management according to ISO 14001 and occupational health and safety management according to ISO 45001. For the successful pass of their assessment requirements he has received CQI/IRCA approved certificates.
Aiming to contribute to the sustainability of the planet within the framework of environment, society and corporate governance (ESG) as defined by the EU Green Deal, he is a GRI certified professional for sustainability reporting. GRI standards consitute the basis for the ESRS and VSME sustainability reporting standards adopted by the E.U. The combined knowledge of acoustics and ESG requirements provide a strong foundation for sustainable acoustic solutions.
He collaborates with the Department of Music Technology and Acoustics of the Hellenic Mediterranean University. He is a member of the Membersʼ Board of the Hellenic Institute of Acoustics (HELINA), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and the Institute of Acoustics (IOA). He is author in scientific papers and contributions in international and national conferences, where he keeps up to date with current developments in acoustics.
