Measurements of acoustic indicators according to legislation

Hellenic and European legislation specify sound level limits not to be exceeded in order to avoid population disturbance.

Noise exposure has found to have negative effects on human health. Consequently, legislation includes limits for acoustic indicators that should not be exceeded where appropriate. Different parameters and criteria are taken into account for the measurement and analysis of each acoustic indicator, which also determine the settings of the measuring equipment. To meet the needs of such measurements, we use high precision equipment with frequency analysis selection. Such capabilities are not provided by low-precision sound level meters and smartphone applications, the use of which, combined with limited knowledge of acoustics, can lead to erroneous measurements. In addition, the provided services include the measurement of acoustic indicators reported case-based in international scientific and technical literature. This literature includes, among others, standards (e.g. ELOT, ISO, ANSI, DIN, LEED, BREEAM), as well as documents from scientific bodies, such as the Hellenic Institute of Acoustics, the British Institute of Acoustics and the German Deutsche Gesellschaft für Akustik.

Furthermore, the services provided include the indicators describing the acoustic comfort in the new Building Regulation (Government Gazette B' 3985/22.06.2023). It is noted that after request, the Hellenic Institute of Acoustics submitted a proposal to the General Secretariat for Spatial Planning and Urban Environment of the Ministry of Environment and Energy in replacement of article 22 of the building regulation with updated values of acoustic indicators. Dr. Spyros Brezas participated in the composition of the proposal, as a member of the Members’ Board of the Hellenic Institute of Acoustics.
